How Many Bundles of Shingles: The Arithmetic Behind a Roof Order
This is arithmetic, not an estimate. Every step can be checked.
Step one: floor area to roof area
Multiply the footprint by the pitch factor. At 6/12 it is 1.118; at 12/12 it is 1.414.
A 2,000 sq ft footprint at 6/12 is 2,236 sq ft of roof. At 12/12 it is 2,828 sq ft.
Step two: squares and bundles
One square is 100 sq ft of roof surface. Three bundles cover one square for standard three-tab and most architectural shingles.
| Footprint | Pitch | Roof area | Squares | Bundles |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1,200 sq ft | 4/12 | 1,265 sq ft | 12.6 | 38 |
| 1,200 sq ft | 6/12 | 1,342 sq ft | 13.4 | 41 |
| 1,200 sq ft | 8/12 | 1,442 sq ft | 14.4 | 44 |
| 1,200 sq ft | 12/12 | 1,697 sq ft | 17.0 | 51 |
| 1,700 sq ft | 4/12 | 1,792 sq ft | 17.9 | 54 |
| 1,700 sq ft | 6/12 | 1,901 sq ft | 19.0 | 58 |
| 1,700 sq ft | 8/12 | 2,043 sq ft | 20.4 | 62 |
| 1,700 sq ft | 12/12 | 2,404 sq ft | 24.0 | 73 |
| 2,000 sq ft | 4/12 | 2,108 sq ft | 21.1 | 64 |
| 2,000 sq ft | 6/12 | 2,236 sq ft | 22.4 | 68 |
| 2,000 sq ft | 8/12 | 2,404 sq ft | 24.0 | 73 |
| 2,000 sq ft | 12/12 | 2,828 sq ft | 28.3 | 85 |
| 2,600 sq ft | 4/12 | 2,741 sq ft | 27.4 | 83 |
| 2,600 sq ft | 6/12 | 2,907 sq ft | 29.1 | 88 |
| 2,600 sq ft | 8/12 | 3,125 sq ft | 31.2 | 94 |
| 2,600 sq ft | 12/12 | 3,677 sq ft | 36.8 | 111 |
The table uses 1.118 as a working pitch factor and rounds bundles up, because you cannot buy a third of a bundle.
Step three: waste
Add 10% for a simple gable, 15% for a roof with hips and valleys. Ridge caps and starter strip are separate products and are usually counted in linear feet, not bundles.
This is the step where cheap quotes go wrong. A quote that matches the bare area exactly is a quote that will ask for more money on day two.

Frequently asked
Is a square the same as 100 square feet of house?
No. A square is 100 square feet of roof surface, which is more than 100 square feet of floor because the roof is tilted.
How much does a bundle weigh?
Roughly 60 to 80 pounds for standard shingles. That matters for how many trips up the ladder, and for whether a delivery is worth paying for.
