Roof Pitch Adds Up to 41% to the Bill, and Almost Nobody Quotes It
This is geometry, not an estimate. Every number on this page can be checked with a calculator.
Why floor area is the wrong number
Roofing is priced by the square: 100 square feet of roof surface. Roof surface is larger than floor area because the roof is tilted, and the steeper the tilt the more slope you have to cover.
The relationship is exact. Take the pitch in inches of rise per foot of run, divide by twelve, square it, add one, and take the square root. That is the multiplier.
At 6/12 the multiplier is 1.118. At 12/12 it is 1.414. The difference between a standard roof and a steep one on the same house is about a quarter of the whole bill.
The table
| Floor footprint | Pitch | Multiplier | Roof surface |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1,200 | 4 / 12 | 1.054× | 1,265 |
| 1,200 | 6 / 12 | 1.118× | 1,342 |
| 1,200 | 8 / 12 | 1.202× | 1,442 |
| 1,200 | 12 / 12 | 1.414× | 1,697 |
| 1,700 | 4 / 12 | 1.054× | 1,792 |
| 1,700 | 6 / 12 | 1.118× | 1,901 |
| 1,700 | 8 / 12 | 1.202× | 2,043 |
| 1,700 | 12 / 12 | 1.414× | 2,404 |
| 2,000 | 4 / 12 | 1.054× | 2,108 |
| 2,000 | 6 / 12 | 1.118× | 2,236 |
| 2,000 | 8 / 12 | 1.202× | 2,404 |
| 2,000 | 12 / 12 | 1.414× | 2,828 |
| 2,600 | 4 / 12 | 1.054× | 2,741 |
| 2,600 | 6 / 12 | 1.118× | 2,907 |
| 2,600 | 8 / 12 | 1.202× | 3,125 |
| 2,600 | 12 / 12 | 1.414× | 3,677 |
A 2,000 sq ft footprint is 2,236 sq ft of roof at 6/12 and 2,828 sq ft at 12/12. At $6.40 per square foot installed that is a difference of $3,789 on the same house.
The part that is not geometry
Steep roofs also cost more per square foot to install, because crews have to work on them differently and material slides. We do not have a published figure for that premium that we would stand behind, so this site does not model it.
That means our steep-roof numbers are probably low, and we would rather say so than invent a multiplier.
What else changes the area
Hips, valleys and dormers add cuts and waste without changing the geometry formula. Complex roofs commonly waste 10% to 15% of material; a simple gable wastes far less.
Overhangs add to the footprint before the pitch multiplier even applies, so measure the roof edge, not the wall line.
Frequently asked
How do I measure my roof pitch?
From a ladder or a window, hold a level horizontally against the roof and measure the rise over a 12 inch run. Many phone level apps will give you the angle directly; 45 degrees is 12/12.
Does a steeper roof last longer?
Generally yes, because water and debris shed faster. The data on lifespan by pitch is thin, so treat this as a strong rule of thumb rather than a measured result.
Is roof area the same as the squares on my quote?
Yes. One square is 100 square feet of roof surface. If your quote says 22 squares, the roofer is pricing 2,200 square feet of actual roof.
