What Does a 150 sq ft Kitchen Remodel Cost?

The figure below includes the parts of the job that do not shrink when the job does — the permit, the delivery, the crew's morning. That is why a smaller job costs more per sq ft than a bigger one.

Adjust for your state

Fixed costs of $1,400 are included in every figure on this page, so the per-square-foot price falls as the job gets bigger.

What the number is made of

Every figure on this page follows the same arithmetic: a fixed portion for permits, delivery and getting a crew to your address, plus a per-sq ft rate for material and labor. The fixed part is why the per-sq ft price on this page is not the same as on a larger job.

Cost breakdown for this size
ComponentLowHigh
Fixed costs (permits, delivery, setup)$1,400$1,400
Materials$8,730$13,320
Labor$10,670$16,280
Total$19,400$29,600

The same size, five different states

Material prices do not change at the state line. Labor does. These five states sit at different points of the federal wage distribution for this trade.

Same job, adjusted for state wages
StateLabor factorLowHigh
Oklahoma×0.79$17,106$26,100
Arizona×0.85$17,810$27,174
West Virginia×0.92$18,546$28,298
New Hampshire×1.08$20,211$30,837
Illinois×1.40$23,679$36,128

Only the labor line moves between states. That is a deliberate limitation, not an oversight: state-level material pricing is not something we have reliable data for, so we do not pretend to.

How much of this budget is cabinetry?

About 40% in a mid-range remodel, then flooring at 18% and countertops at 14%. Those three are three quarters of the job.

What is the difference between a cosmetic and a mid-range remodel at this size?

Cosmetic keeps the boxes and changes doors, counters and paint. Mid-range replaces the cabinets. At this size that step alone is the difference between the two numbers below.

How long does a remodel this size take?

Six to ten weeks for mid-range, longer if cabinets are custom. Demolition is fast; waiting for cabinets is the schedule.

Data note. Figures are computed from a fixed-cost-plus-rate model: $1,400 fixed, plus $120 to $188 per sq ft installed, with 55% of the variable portion treated as labor. Labor is adjusted with U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics OEWS wage data by state. Material ranges come from published 2026 cost data. These are planning ranges, not quotes.
